Our Story
The art of zilou weaving has withstood centuries of change, surviving historical upheavals and being lovingly passed down through generations. It reached us today in its simple, humble, and unpretentious form during a period of my own searching and discovery.
I’m Faride Dehghani, a 2008 graduate in Carpet Design from Yazd University of Art and a 2012 graduate in Business Management from Shahid Beheshti University of Tehran. Since then, I’ve been immersed in the world of carpet design.
In my exploration of ancient Persian art, I uncovered a forgotten handwoven master-piece from the desert and a workshop passionately preserving this craft.
Zilou, one of the oldest handwoven rugs, is believed to be over 1,100 years old. It has deep roots in Persian architecture, especially in arid regions, and once held a significant place in popular culture. However, it nearly faded away with the advent of modern industry.
What fascinated me about zilou were its unique qualities: a double-sided, plant-based, minimalist rug that had not received the recognition it deserved among Persian carpets.
This revelation inspired the creation of Ronaus. By blending traditional zilou weaving with contemporary design, we seek to reintroduce this beautiful art form into modern spaces, hoping it is received and cherished as it truly deserves.
