Water has always been a symbol of purity and creation for Iranians, regarded as a divine and sacred element. As the Greek historian Herodotus writes, Iranians esteemed and revered water, whether sweet or salty, from the sea or a river. In ancient pottery, artisans depicted the sea and water using wavy vertical and horizontal lines, as well as repeating checkered and triangular patterns to represent the shimmer and sparkle of water. And a Khalij (gulf) is understood as a part of the sea that extends into the land.
